Multicultural Iftar Dinner with Senator Fatima Payman
3/10/20251 min read
Virgin Mary Mosque recently hosted a powerful and meaningful Iftar dinner, focusing on the BOIV (Boards of Imam Victoria) anti-racist project, led by Jazeer Nizamudeen and funded by the Wyndham City Council through its Countering Islamophobia initiative. The event brought together a diverse group of people committed to fostering unity and tackling Islamophobia in our communities.
We were honored to be joined by Wyndham City Mayor Mia Shaw, along with councillors Jennie Barrera, Jasmine Hill, and Shannon McGuire, who represented various communities, demonstrating a shared commitment to inclusivity and respect. The evening also featured insights from Senator Fatima Payman, the first Muslim hijabi to join the Labour Party, who spoke candidly about her journey and her work to combat Islamophobia. Her words were especially meaningful to the youth present, inspiring many with her dedication to positive change.
The event was a reminder of the strength in our diversity, with leaders from different faiths and backgrounds coming together to support the cause. A heartfelt thank you to Virgin Mary Mosque for hosting such an insightful and inspiring evening, and to all the leaders and community members who contributed to making this event a success.
Together, we continue to work towards a future of mutual understanding and respect, where Islamophobia has no place in our society.
